About us...

Magic Lantern Foundation (MLF) came into being in 1989 as a media action group with the objective of using communication tools to advance human rights and give voice to the problems and concerns of marginalised people. In the process, we realised the growing importance of the audio visual medium, video in particular, in both informing as well as initiating debates and discussions on social issues. We decided to concentrate on this medium. Since the very beginning, MLF has been involved with:

Production of issue-based documentaries in partnership with people's organisations.

Campaigns on issues of social justice, environment, gender and culture. MLF has campaigned on the rights of forest dwellers to forest produce, labour rights of construction workers and against the development of large-scale tourism.

Training of grassroots activists on the skills of production and media education with grassroots organisations, to develop an understanding about the role of media, critically assess media and integrate media use with local interventions.

Distribution and dissemination of independent films.
